The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is hosting the above captioned workshop in Suriname on 8th and 9th December 2009 as a pre-event to the Caribbean ICT Roadshow - Suriname.
The workshop provides a step-by-step approach for regulators, policy makers and universal access program administrators for bringing broadband access to rural areas and presents the experiences of the Dominican Republic and Peru.
Experience has demonstrated that the provision of basic telephony and broadband Internet in a community constitutes a critical step in that community’s path to economic and social development. One of the main functions of policy makers and regulators in helping society bridge the digital divide is to be the prime enabler, facilitator and promoter of telecommunications infrastructure deployment and, particularly, broadband access throughout the country and the applications that this infrastructure can deliver.
This workshop draws primarily from the experiences in the Dominican Republic and Peru in implementing successful broadband connectivity projects to present best practices, challenges and lessons for providing broad band in rural communities. The target audience is as follows:
